Declaration of Sponsorship Compliance

Annual Scientific Meeting - Applies to all supporting companies

This web page sets out how the ILAE British Branch declares industry support at its Annual Scientific Meeting. It applies identically to every supporting company. It is issued with our sponsorship packages so that companies can confirm at the point of booking that our arrangements meet their obligations under the ABPI Code of Practice.

The ILAE British Branch is not a signatory to the ABPI Code. We provide the arrangements below because they are good practice, because they support the integrity of our scientific programme, and because our supporting companies carry obligations under Clause 5.6 of the Code which they cannot discharge without us.

1: The ILAE British Branch sponsorship declaration

The following statement is our standard declaration of industry support. It appears in the channels as listed in section 2.

The ILAE British Branch is grateful for the generous support of the companies listed. Those companies have had no editorial input into or control over the scientific programme, with the exception of the sponsored symposia, the content of which is the responsibility of the sponsoring company.

Support is used towards commercial exhibition space and/or sponsored symposia. Individual company compliance statements appear in the conference handbook and alongside each sponsored symposium. Unless specifically stated in the programme, funding from supporting companies has not been used for the purposes of entertainment.

The declaration is always presented above the logos of supporting companies, never below them, and companies are identified individually by name / logo.

Individual company-specific declarations can only be accommodated in specific areas, and must be within the parameters set by the organisers* - see section 2 below.

3. Principles behind these arrangements

Equal Treatment

All supporting companies appear together, under one declaration, in every channel. No company receives placement, prominence or size advantage over another, irrespective of the value of its support.

Accurate description of involvement

The declaration must reflect what a company actually did. For this reason we do not attribute meeting-wide sponsorship to individual sessions, and we do not present a single company's branding in a way that implies the meeting is that company's event. Overstating a company's role is as much a failure of accurate declaration as understating it.

Independence of the scientific programme

Sponsor branding is not placed within the slides of independent speakers. Declarations are delivered on ILAE-produced holding slides at session level, run by our own audio-visual team. This ensures delegates see the declaration repeatedly throughout each day without industry material being embedded in the presentations of independent academic faculty.

Placement in the printed handbook

The sponsor logos and sponsorship declaration appear on page 2, before any programme or scientific content. Page 2 is a left-hand page.

The outer cover of the handbook carries ILAE British Branch logo only. Page 1 is the contents page for the handbook.

4: Sponsored symposia

Sponsored symposia are part of the meeting and are listed in the programme. They are not part of the peer-reviewed scientific programme. Our arrangements are as follows:

• Symposium outlines are submitted to the ILAE British Branch committee and reviewed for suitability. Content is developed by, and is the responsibility of, the sponsoring company.

• Each symposium is identified in the programme, the handbook and the app as a sponsored symposium, naming the sponsoring company.

• Each sponsoring company may supply its own compliance statement and must declare whether the session is promotional or non-promotional. This is included alongside the session details and displayed on the opening slide.

• Where a session is promotional, the sponsoring company is responsible for certification and for the inclusion of prescribing information, in line with its obligations under the Code.

The ILAE British Branch does not describe sponsored symposia as educational on a company's behalf. The character of the session is declared by the company that controls its content.

5: Requests beyond this standard

We keep this standard under review and welcome comment on it. Where a company believes a specific provision of the ABPI Code requires arrangements beyond those set out here, we ask that the relevant clause is identified so that we can consider it properly and, if appropriate, apply the change for all supporting companies.

Changes are not made for individual companies. Where we adopt a change, it becomes part of this standard and applies to everyone.
