Abstracts and Awards for Online Presentation

Abstract & Gowers Award deadline: Monday 17th August 2020 at 1700 hrs

Submission of abstracts are now invited for the virtual one day research meeting – open to members of the British / Irish Branches as well as non-members. These should be submitted under one of the following two categories:

  • General abstracts
  • Neurobiology of Epilepsy abstracts – ERUK Céline Newman Prize

The best abstracts in both the ‘General Abstract’ and ‘Neurobiology of Epilepsy’ categories will be selected for online presentations.

The Council of the ILAE British Branch also invite entries for the Gowers Award. These are for dissertations of up to 3000 words on any aspect of epilepsy. The awards are in two categories:

• Clincal Science Award
• Medical Student Award

Abstracts and Awards for General Abstracts

In the ‘General Abstract’ category, prizes are awarded  for the best Online Platform Presentations (1st prize – £250, and 2nd prize – £125).

Abstracts must be no more than 400 words.

Authors of the highest ranking abstracts will be invited to give an online platform presentation. Abstracts and Award for Neurobiology of Epilepsy:

Epilepsy Research UK (ERUK) & The Council of the British Branch of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) are pleased to announce their intention to award The ERUK Céline Newman Neurobiology of Epilepsy Award at the virtual one day research meeting. The Award, worth £500, will be given to the best online presentation at the Neurobiology of Epilepsy platform session and judged by a panel comprising representatives from the ERUK and ILAE.

The award is open to early career researchers and health care professionals employed at university lecturer level or below (or NHS equivalent) and working in the field of basic scientific epilepsy research in the UK. Entrants must, at a minimum, be in their second year of an epilepsy focused basic science PhD. Entrants are required to submit an abstract describing original experimental epilepsy research using the online submission system. Abstracts should be no more than 400 words and MUST be placed within a clinical context.

Submissions will be reviewed by ERUK and the ILAE British Branch Council and the best abstracts will be shortlisted for presentation online during the virtual one day research meeting on the 19th November.

The decision of the Epilepsy Research UK and ILAE British Branch panel of experts is final.

Abstracts not shortlisted will be included in a digital abstract book.

  • Gowers Clinical Science Award (£500)
  • Gowers Medical Student Award (£500)

A dissertation on any aspect of epilepsy

We will also accept submissions from FY1’s as long as the  work was completed  as a medical student. (submissions from FY1s will need to be accompanied with confirmation from the author’s supervisor that the work was completed as a medical student)

There is an award of £500 for the best submission.

Gowers Clinical Science Award (£500)

A dissertation on any aspect of epilepsy

This category is open to all health professionals and we welcome essay submissions from those working in all clinical specialities related to Epilepsy. Essays might focus on one of a range of topics such as epidemiology, clinical effectiveness, risk, quality of life, sociology, neuropsychology, or other relevant topics. Essays can be up to a maximum of 3000 words and can be on any topic of clinical epilepsy (but cannot have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere).
